I just purchased a 1995 bayline with a 3.0 LX Mercruiser a week ago. I took to the lake last week and the boat ran fine at low speeds but as I cruised at higher speeds, the motor ran very hot at which point I turned off the motor and called it a day. (It did crank over the next day). I just learned this was my fault, since I started the motor in my garage for about 30 seconds prior to going to the lake and it seems that the impeller is shot. I was wonering if anyone can give me any information on what other problems I might have created and how costly can this get. I am taking the boat in next week to have impeller replaced.

Thanks

Henry

Hankster33, You are correct in that it is probably your fault. Running an I/O boat out of the water is not good. The impeller will not take it for more than a few seconds. The good thing is that they are inexpensive and fairly easy to replace, depending on your boat. Once replaced everything should be ok! Good luck, David

Thanks. The boat came with an extra impeller but I have no idea where it goes (will be getting a manual). I am taking it to the shop this week and they quoted me about $500.00 to replace.

depending on how hot your engine got-you might be looking at exhaust bellows and water shutter on the exhaust manifold-also your exhaust bellows at the drive can get burnt. the impeller goes in the lower half of the stern drive.

Thanks for your responses. I ran it for about 2-3 minutes when I realized the motor was overheating. There was smoke coming out and smelled like burnt oil or rubber. Once it cooled down I tried to start but it would not and eventually I drained the battery. Had to get towed back in. The next morning out of curiosity I cranked over and it actually started but I shut off within 10 secs or so. The $500 includes a minor tune-up and impeller. If exhaust bellows and water shutter would be required, do you have any ball-park figure on how much this would cost.?
