Mercruiser 3.0 question

I have an] 1972 Searay 190 SRV. It has a Mercruiser 165 that after 46 years finally gave up the ghost. Not repairable without a new long block and head etc etc and so on. A remanufactured engine is way out of my financial means. I have been looking for a running 165 but that is looking less and less likely.

So for the question. Would a Mercruiser 3.0 be a drop in replacement? (the GM 135 HP inline 4 cyl), not the 470) Would it bolt right up to my original sterndrive. I imagine I would have to build some new motor mounts but that is not an issue. I have seen quite a few of these available and they were made into the mid 90's so they should be in running condition. I am not particularly concerned about boat speed. Just need an engine that will get it up on a plane.

I t would drop in but there's a couple catches

i think youll miss the the extra hp in a 19 ft boat

the drive ratio will be different for a six vs four, at very least you will need to drop down in pitch.

Bondo I believe you have an mc1 drive and when the r,mr, and alpha one came out the rear motor mount spacing changed where the flywheel cover mounts to the inner transom plate, I think in 1990 or 1991 they went to a 14" flywheel which I don't think will fit under your flywheel cover nor will engine coupler from old engine bolt up. I think Bondo can confirm this for sure.

IMHO your best bet would be to find a rotten glasser 1980s or newer 4.3 with an Alfa one and take The Whole thing pulleys to prop and drop it in vs mix and match. A 2 bbl 4.3 non vortec is 175 hp, 4 bbl is 205? Votecs are even more hp for a boat your size
