Mercruiser 3.0 Starting issue--I searched but think this may be simple?

The block is new and has a new alternator on it, and all the old accessories, and it runs great. The only issue I have is with starting. No matter what procedure I use to set the choke, or let crank, the motor always starts right at the point when I let off the key. It's almost as if there is no spark while cranking, but as soon as the key is in the run position, the motor has enough momentum to turn over once more and fire up. Does somebody know where the first place I should investigate is? I haven't started any diagnosing but presume that there is something faulty to cause to spark while cranking.

Thanks for any help!

What year is it? Sounds like you may have a point type distributor and the purple yellow wire from the starter solenoid to the coil + terminal is missing.

The boat is a 98 and it just had the block replaced so the motor is probably the same as a 98.

I'll check for that wire tonight.

Thanks!

You don't have a points distributor, nor that wire on a 98. Probably a bad ignition switch.

I'll have to test that then, I think I saw a write up in the Adults only section for that. Thanks.
