I have a 2003 Bayliner 185 with a 3.0L Mercruiser that has about 150 hours on it. From what I can tell the previous owner took fantastic care of it. Lately the engine has been hard to cold start, unless I prime it with the throttle. At idle if I just click the throttle into gear and then proceed to nail it to WOT the engine will sputter and usually die. If I gradually go from idle to WOT there isn't a problem. Also after I run the boat at high speed and then come to a stop and shut down the engine, it usually sputters and pops (diesel effect?) Then after sitting for 30-40 minutes (like taking a break to swim/fish) the engine will crank and not start unless I prime the engine. Other times I can just turn the key and it will fire right up (except for cold starts.) Would a quick replacement of the spark plugs help or does this sound like a timing issue?
I have the Mercruiser manual but does anybody know the recommended spark plugs and gap for this engine? Also what should the timing be set at? I live (and boat) in freshwater in Western Massachusetts if that matters.
