I have a 1988 mercruiser 3.0L. I tried starting it for the first time since my local marina winterized it last winter. Needless to say it wouldn't start. I saw good fuel flowing into the carb. and could even smell gas when she became flooded.
I have a breaker point ingition system. I went through checking plug and coil wires, making sure they were connected. I cleaned the plugs, even though they were brand new with the winterization. I read in my Clymer manual to check the coil for spark by removing it from the distributor and holding it 1/2" from a ground( I used a bolt on my engines head) and cranking the engine. No spark. I took the coil to a local auto parts store and he tested resistance and told me it was fine. Distributor cap looks good and I cleaned contacts. Points look brand new and properly set.
I'm stumped. Could it be the condenser, which I replaced last spring? Could the coil still be the culprit, and if so how do I test it? Could it be plug and/or coil wires, and if so is there a way check them without replacing them?
The engine turns over great and I have a brand new West Marine duel purpose battery.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Brian

If you cranked the engine and put the coil wire close to ground and received no spark the coil is bad, and for the cost of things just replace the condenser. Just try new coil.

Do the same test only with one of the spark plugs. No fire there, it is the distributor. Althought coils are goofy sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. If it is the original ,I'd change it. Can use automotive with bronze post. Check all your ground wires!!!

Also, get a good volt meter and start going to town on that thing.

i found if to be good practice to replace plugs,, wires, points and condenser every spring.for your other problem take out one plug hold it agaisnt good metal after you plug the wire back on. have someone spin the motor over if no spark pull the cap off check the points if all looks good get a coil.p/s when on the water keep a extra set of plugs just in case.

Even if your condenser is bad you will get spark. It will burn up your points but will spark from coil.Check all your connections take them apart and hit them with a wire brush.A little corrosion will give you grief. Also use the wardens(wifes)nail file and clean the points .Hope this helps. Also make sure you are getting power to the coil.Check this first No power No spark.

Re: mercruiser 3.0L ignition problem

Problem solved. I replaced the plugs & plug wires, nothing. I replaced the coil, nothing. I cleaned every electrical connector I could find around the engine, nothing. I replaced the condenser, nothing. FINALLY, I "borrowed" my wifes nail file and cleaned the points, and as soon as I turned the key she came to life, blew smoke for a few seconds, and ran better than I've ever seen.
Thanks everyone for the great advice and support.
I just have one last question: Would anyone recommend me doing the Pertronix electronic ignition conversion, and if so is it really as easy as it looks?
Thanks
Brian
