I have a 2004 Bayliner 185BR thats powered by a Mercruiser 3.0L engine. Over the past year i've been having issues starting. It will click when I turn the key then I have to turn it again to start (Sign of starter going bad). Ok so I take my oem starter to tri-state battery. They size it up, 11 tooth, and give me a new Delco replacement. I installed it (wired the SAME as the OEM) and when I give the boat power through my battery switch, the starter will spin constantly. Turning the key does nothing, even turns when its in the off position. Its not even turning the flywheel either when it spins. Can someone help me here? Much appreciated!

Yes its SAEJ1171 Approved. The wires are on correctly. The dealer sells marine starters, batteries, does carb rebuilds, etc. They confirmed the wires were connected properly as well. I'm going to test the slave solenoid tomorrow and see the results. I could understand if the slave was burnt up not allowing a connection but having the starter hot when the boat has power??

Even when I remove the wire on the starter solenoid thats connected to the slave, the starter will still spin. There's a bracket on the positive wire that connects to the starter solenoid, just curious what is inside that plastic housing?? Neutral safety switch?

I came across this post http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=506458 sounds like he had the same problem as me.

A is my positive (Red and Orange wires), C is my ground (Black wire), and B is my slave solenoid wire (Yellow with Red Stripe). And A is not touching D when its connected nor B. So if I have A & C connected as noted, it will constantly run when I hook up my battery whether the yellow w/red stripe (slave) is connected or not.

Ayuh,... You shouldn't have Touched terminal C,.... It's the out-bound power to the starter, from the solenoid...

The starter is grounded through it's case, to the motor's block,... No Ground wire...

Re: Mercruiser 3.0L Starter Issues

Hmmm I knew it was grounded from the starter itself. Just curious but why would the old starter be connected to C on the ground?

Post a picture of what you have. There shouldn't even be a black wire in the bundle or even near that area for that matter.

Double check to make sure your ring terminals on A are not touching C. When you turn ya batt switch on an the starter motor spins , you got 12 volts going to that term C. The part you described on term A is that you were'nt sure of is a 90 amp fuse. The only wires in the harness that connect to this starter assembly are red [batt] ,red [trim on some models] orange [alt] on term A , yellow /red tracer [solonoid] on term B , and some applications used a purple on term D. Ive never seen a black grnd wire on a starter .However i have seen owners replace a starter themself an hook the battery back up an eng starts spinning an thats what it was , there was a connector touching another terminal.

Re: Mercruiser 3.0L Starter Issues

Ok so that black wire that was connected to C on the old starter solenoid.. I followed it all the way back to my battery switch. Therefore is my positive. I connected it to A (along with the orange & red on 90 amp fuse). Viola no more spinning, and turns over by key immediately perfectly. I am an idiot. Thank you all for your support!

I'm just curious why the original starter would have them on two separate posts, A & C.
