I have a 1996 20' Maxum cuddy with a 3.0LX that has a slight hesitation on acceleration. The hesitation is there regardless of what RPMs the engine is running at. When throttle is applied there is a short pause and the carb sound like it's sucking air and not getting enough fuel.

The boat did not get a lot of use before I bought it, but I am reasonably sure it got all the maint. required each year. I've run a few bottles of Seafoam through the tank and replaced the plugs.

I was wondering if this could be fixed with an adjustment of the idle mixture screws, or if I should just buckle down and rebuild the carb.

Aside from the hesitation the boat runs fine at 4400 RPMS @ 43mph.

Re: Mercruiser 3.0LX hesitation

sounds like the accelerator pump, i had the same problem on my mercruiser 140. I replaced the pump and i had to adjust the float to allow a little more fuel in the bowl, that corrected my problem, however you may want to get other opinions from more experianced boaters before spending time and money there.

Re: Mercruiser 3.0LX hesitation

do a search on my username, I have a 2002 3.0 and have posted on it in detail. search isn't working for me currently otherwise i'd post the links.

The accelerator pump is not the problem.
It's due to a lean condition which is the transition circuit of the carb (before the main jets come online). You may but unlikely fix the hesitation a little by richening the idle mixture screws, but more commonly it's caused by too low a fuel level in the bowl which is causing the motor to lean out. The fix is adjusting the float so the fuel level in the bowl is higher. If that doesn't fix it then you have junk in the carb, in the transition circuit specifically, which needs cleaning out. So you don't need a full rebuild per se, just a bowl gasket and carb cleaner. I would first adjust the idle mixture screws as rich as you can but still maintain a good idle. If that fixes the problem enough to your liking then you don't need to do anymore work, your idle mixture may have just been too lean to begin with. Otherwise pull the cover off the bowl and before you adjust the float, you have the carb open anyway, clean any sediment out the bowl and spray carb cleaner thru all small passages. The transition circuit are the 2 small slits in the carb throat just above the throttle blades, you can only get at them if you have the carb off the engine, that's what you want cleaned out. You may be able to get by without removing the carb from the engine by spraying carb cleaner into the main jets and into where the power valve is (pwr valve removed) and flushing it out that way.

This may be a silly question but where is the idle mixture screw on the mercarb?

Serial 0F782755 3.0LX

The manual says it has a tamper free adjustment.

I found a spring loaded screw just below the float bowl just above where the carb mounts to the manifold.. this it?
