Mercruiser 3.7 (165) Oil Leak

mystery oil leak on a 1987 merc (3.7 L). thought to be the valve cover gasket however I glued that with silicone to seal it (i know, bad choice...) but its not leaking from there and looks like it could be coming from the intake however the intake has no oil passages....there's a plate right below the intake covering what would be the lifter valley (the 3.7 is one-half of a ford 460 v-8 right?) if it was a full engine. What exactly is this plate? There are no other leaks except from around the intake manifold area....HELP!!!!!
