Mercruiser 3 litre cuts out in reverse???

Hi, I have a Fletcher 19GTS with a 3 litre Mercruiser and Alpha 1 leg which is all controlled through a Quicksilver Classic 3000.

The engine runs beautifully and will rev in both forward and reverse, but when you try to engage reverse gear it cuts the engine instantly. It does not do this when you engage forward gear.

I was wondering if it may be something to do with the switch that doesn't allow the engine to start when in gear???

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

The starter lockout switch in the control box has nothing to do with the momentary engine kill switch on the shift linkage in the engine bay.

Generally an engine dying when shifting into reverse is a sign of a worn intermediate shift cable. The shorter shift cable from the momentary kill switch to the lower unit. As the cable wears and carves a groove inside the cable housing the drag on cable movement increases enough so as to hold the momentary kill switch engaged for more than a moment, long enough that the engine actually dies.

Watch the movement of the switch linkage while someone else shifts the boat, you'll see that the switch operates correctly shifting into forward, but 'hangs' a second shifting into reverse.

Order a new intermediate cable for your model and serial #.

Remove the outdrive and change the cable, follow the directions carefully to ensure correct adjustment.
