Have a 2000 350 EFI MerCruiser Black Scorpion and some issues with starting.
The engine won't turnover consistently when trying to start. This has happened right when putting in, and has happened after running for an hour or so, then sitting with engine off for 30 mins.
Every time this has happened I have been able to get it restarted. Here's what happened my last two outings:
Yesterday, put the boat in the water, turned the blower on, and tried to crank but it wouldn't turn over. I wait a few secs, try to turn over again, but nothing (no click either). After doing this for about 2-3 minutes, it finally decides to turn over and cranks up. Then the boat ran fine for a couple hours, including a couple times of turning off the boat, sitting for 30 minutes, and recranking without a problem. But then, we cruised up the lake, turned off the boat for 15-20 minutes, tried to crank but the engine wouldn't turn over again. After several tries of turning the ignition switch on it decided to crank up.
Similar thing happened the week before.
I purchased a brand new battery last week as well (when I took my old battery in, they said it wasn't holding a charge). But even with the new battery, I had the problems noted above yesterday. Do I need to buy a battery charger (even tho the battery is brand new), and charge it up? Could that be the problem?
It's kind of hard to diagnose because as I said, it does not have trouble turning over every time. I'm going to try to run through the "ADULTS ONLY" diagnosis today.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
