Mercruiser 350 ignition timing, and speed / RPM

Engine is a 1987 Mercruiser 260/V8 - serial number 0B651656
Drive is an Alpha One Gen 1 - serial number 0B612075
Boat is a 1987 Power Play XLT-185 (19 ft closed bow runabout)

I splashed my project this past weekend - man what a blast. This is my first boat and it felt great out on the water. When running it, I was able to get up to 4,000 RPM at WOT and GPS indicated 50 mph. I'm running a 21 pitch 3 blade cleaver prop (I'm told this is one of the props that was originally sold on this boat when new). Based on some notes I had taken from somewhere on this forum, I think I should be closer to 4,600 - 4,800 RPM at WOT, correct?

Thinking about what may be the cause made me wonder if I have my base ignition timing set correct. My engine has the TB IV ignition system. Are there different TB IV systems that require different base timing? Unfortunately someone who owned the boat before me spray painted over the label on top of the TB IV module, so I can't see any of the part numbers or other data that may be on there. When timing the engine before going out for the water test, we set the idle to between 650-700 rpm in neutral, put the timing light on the #1 spark plug lead, and set the timing to 8 degrees BTDC.

Other things I'm thinking may be the cause are old plug wires (I have new plugs, distributor cap, and distributor sensor) or maybe some adjustment on the carb or throttle linkage. Or maybe this prop is just too much pitch? 50 mph is plenty fast for what I need the boat to do, but I'm just wanting to make sure I'm not hurting something by not being able to get to the ~4,700 rpm range. Appreciate all constructive input.

you could bump the base timing up to about 10

However verify your tach first. if your numbers are right, your at 7% prop slip which is fantastic

However I am betting your tach is off a bit and you are at 4400

Thanks, I've been wanting to get a new timing light that has a tach built into it....this may be a good opportunity.

Found you some numbers.
If the module mounts to the exhaust elbow, then the part number is -814295A1. If it's mounted to the distributor body, it's -805361T4 (and I'd be adding a wire from the distributor body to a good ground!)

The module curve code is 'V8-22A'. Here's the curve graph...

I use an $11 laser tach. on my 3rd one as the other two got hit by belts / flywheel teeth. however any excuse to buy new tools is always a good excuse

It could be one of 2 modules, 'V8-24' or 'V8-22A'...

Give me some information on the engine and I'll identify it for you...

1. Is the TB-IV module generation A (big box on the exhaust elbow), generation B (small triangular module on a plate on the exhaust elbow, or generation C (mounted on the distributor). See my document on Thunderbolt Systems in the stickies for a visual reference).

2. Are the cylinder head covers screwed down at the side

or through the centre?

Chris.......
Chris, should be center bolts (starting in 1987) however motor could be a 1986 (perimeter and 2-piece RMS). hope it isnt a left over '85 (perimeter, 1-piece RMS)

@Scott Danforth I've since edited that post as a bit more research came up with the right graph. And it's looking like the centre bolt covers...

Thanks Chris and Scott! It is a center-bolted valve cover 350 with the TB IV mounted to the exhaust elbow. Thanks for confirming I used the correct base timing. I'll look into the laser tach. As much ad I love new tools, an $11 solution sounds good too.

if you already own a decent timing light, I ended up buying this when my old school dwell/tech bit the dust - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RT9BH...9Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

I wanted something that measure coil output (kV) and it has a wireless tach. I had two times where diagnosing a weak spark was difficult, this found them
