It's a 1984 model and the alternator belt is finally showing its age. The belt goes around the port side front motor mount. There are 2 bolts and a shim to remove and I'm guessing that the motor needs to be supported in some way. Anyone have a good photo or can desribe accurately how to support the motor and where?

Remove one bolt at a time. Remove first, put belt in, replace bolt, without shim, then remove the second, and pull belt through. if you remove both bolts the engine could move out of range of the bolts and then you are using a lift.

Great drawing Don!! I have a 1990 3.0L and have replaced the belt twice without supporting the engine (Never thought about it). Anyhow, did not have a problem doing it that way. May want to support to be on the safe side, just saying it did not become an issue when I did it.

The drawing came from Mercruiser, in an owners manual I believe. All I did was point out the bolts so there wasn't a mistake.
I have replaced several that way, and never had a problem.

I have a 1996 Merc 3L. I removed the engine block spacer and have the belt around the alternator and the bottom pulley. However, when trying to get the belt around the top pulley there does not seem to be enough space to get the belt between the engine mount and the bottom of the top pulley.

Do you have to remove the top pulley?

I was able to slightly raise the motor by using a regular car jack to get the clearance I needed to slip the belt trough. I placed the jack under the engine where the spacer block connects to make sure I didn't damage the oil pan.

install second belt around the bolts and than secure to bottom of mount with plastik tie if the belt ever fails on the water 5 minutes you could have the spare installed.happened to me on the raritan bay and i was back fishing in 5 minutes i think it takes a 1/2 bolt.
