I apologize if this has been discussed but I've been searching far and wide and haven't found it.
Here's my issue.
Recent owner of a 2000 Regal 1800 LSR with a 4.3 mercruiser thunderbolt.
I'm pretty mechanically inclined. Was an automotive mechanic apprentice for a few years.
Anyway. I recently found the shifting to be delayed on. Sometimes when shifting into forward I'd get a little clunking as the gears skipped before engaging.
Well I was 2 hours from the dock yesterday when I could barely get it into forward. It would start reving before the shift would occur so needless to say when the shift engaged it was quite painful.
I had been researching the linkage adjustment so what better time. Lifted the hatch and went at adjusting in the middle of the lake.
Now shifting great.
So I'm not looking for adjustment answers.
My question is around how this would have gotten so out of alignment. The barrel on the upper shift cable had to be backed up about 8 turns. This blew me away. I can't for the life of me figure out how that would occur. I thought maybe the threads were stripped and the barrel might have slipped back but everything looks good. The cable looks to be in great shape.
Just want to preempt any future issues.
Thanks for the help.
