Hi All,

I just got a new PMGR style starter to replace the old Prestolite on my 470.

Can anyone advise how to wire the PMGR in and of course still retain the slave solenoid ?

I understand that the red tot he battery goes to the positive large terminal on the starter, but what about the other connections ?

Many thanks

they are wired the same

big red battery wire goes to the "B" terminal

yellow wire with red stripe from the pilot relay goes to the "S" terminal

purple wire with the red stripe goes to the "I" terminal.

Thanks Scott, just to confirm, does your reply take in to account the slave solenoid ?

Does that men that I jumper the small terminals, to the starter solenoid S and I terminals ?

"yellow wire with red stripe from the pilot relay goes to the "S" terminal

purple wire with the red stripe goes to the "I" terminal."

Thanks

Ron.

yes, you mean pilot relay.

no, if your starter doesnt have an "I" terminal, you need another relay, a diode from the S terminal or a different starter to maintain the functionality of the "I" terminal. you do not tie the two together, because your starter wont stop engaging

got a pic of the end of your starter solenoid.

the "R" terminal used to be called the "I" terminal many decades ago.

the big battery cable to the B terminal (big lug to right on your pic)

so the yellow wire with red stripe to the S terminal from the pilot relay (bottom in your pic)

the purple with red wire from the coil + goes to the "R" terminal (top in your pic) this provides full battery voltage to the coil for starting

Hi Scott so you mean that I should remove those cables from the existing slave solenoid on the block and move them to the new solenoid on the starter ?

thanks

Job done - took battery to new starter positive, then from the slave output large stud ran a 27 amp wire to the S post of the new starter - all good.

What did you finally do to bolt the starter in?

Well that was a bit of a revelation, First I got shorter bolts with a 19mm head and I couldn't get a spanner on the engine side one so I went home with the original bolts, took 1/2 inch off them, fixed the lead in and then I could get a 1/2inch ring on it to secure it. so the fix was as you said to shorten the OEM bolts.
