Mercruiser 470 Qs

I just picked up a 1978 Cruisers Rally with the Merc 470 in it. I have been reading a lot of info on it. The motor runs great and strong. Couple questions:

Mine has a coil and distributer cap instead of points. Does that mean it has been changed\upgraded?

I have read about the problems with the Stator and voltage regulator. That being said, mine charges high at anything above idle. (17V or so) Regulator shot? My Furuno LS6000 does not like the high voltage. Everything else on the boat works fine at the higher voltage. Any way I could drop the voltage for the Furuno? I plan to do the alternator upgrade in the future.

What oil do you recommend? Mercruiser 25W40?

Thanks for the help,

-Eli

This is a EXCELLENT site for Q & A. You can also go to Breezeworks 470 Forum all they deal with is the 470. I have gotten excellent advice from both sites.

Distributors with points also have a coil and distributor cap. Take the cap off, what is under the cap?

Don't run it till you get it fixed. At 17V, you will be boiling your batteries to death also. Yes, it's probably a regulator problem, but I would suggest installing an alternator kit instead of the regulator. The regulators are over 450 bucks from Merc.

Looks like the standard ole Delco points distributor and coil to me.

Since my system is charging too high, couldn't I just use an inline regulator after the 470s reg for the time being? I run about 13.5Vs at idle.

What is your definition of an inline regulator?
