OK, I know a lot of you are going to tell me to "JUNK IT", well it's not going to happen. So I would like to ask a few questions and have them answered to help.
#1 I have a conventional engine stand, it will hold a Dodge 440 Magnum which weighs about 700 lbs.? Do I need any type of adapters or special mounts to put the aluminum 470 block on to fully assemble it? My concern is the mounts for the bell housing breaking and diameter if the bolts.
#2 I have seen reference to a tool to bleed the hydraulic lifters, am I correct? If so where can I get or fabricate one? Thank you for your help, Jeff

jerryjerry05, Thank you for your help. I was afraid to put the entire motor on the stand and have the bolts, or the engine block fail. Thanks ,Jeff

Re: Mercruiser 470 rebuild

I have the Manual from Clymer, they show a tool that looks like a valve spring compressor. I am going to change the valve train from stock to roller rockers with a stud kit to elminate the bolts. That way you don't need special length pushrods.thanks again, Jeff

Just make sure you use some grade 8 bolts and some bumper washers and you'll be fine.

Re: Mercruiser 470 rebuild

Be sure to see the special tools section of the manual and get them or very similar. These motors are more sensetive to bolt torque specs along with getting the correct parts. I have the 3.7 from 1987 and love the motor. Many years of full power can be enjoyed as long as you take care of the motor and put it back together correctly. Also, I make sure I use the required lubes as specified with exception that I use Amsoil motor oil. I prefer a class 4 synthetic. Also these motors love 89 or higher octane fuel that is alcohol free. These are my observations from this motor and I would not trade it for anything other than a Ford V-8 (that is due to me being a Ford fan is all, not due to power).

Re: Mercruiser 470 rebuild

bf, somewhere in one of these many threads on the 470, someone posted a link to a website that has all kinds of hi-po mods for the engine. I am not on my regular computer or I would send it, but it's "breezewood" something or other. That site, the proper tools, and the OEM service manuals should get you going in the right direction.

The site is Breezeworks...

Many of the marinas I been to in central Illinois sell standard fuel along with Iowa, most fuel stations have one grade with Ethenol and the rest is straight gas.

Right...marinas were given an exemption, from selling only ethanol blends of fuel.

Must be a reason...maybe that ethanol, is not marine engine 'friendly'?

I use Marine Sta-bil...at 1 oz. per 10 gallons of E-10, cheapest insurance I can find!

It's not nearly as bad as people think. Only if you have a fiberglass tank.

And really, in Central Illinois you can find fuel anywhere that doesn't have ethanol??? I am shocked.
(Been using ethanol is my boat since 2001 and have had ZERO issues. It's not a problem, really. Unless you have a fiberglass tank, which the original poster doesn't have)

And thanks for the reminder and link to Breezeworks. "Breezewood" is a place in Pennsylvania! :)
