mercruiser 5.0 stalls when put in gear

I HAVE AN 89 MURCRUISER 5.0 LITRE WHEN I PUT THE SHIFTER IN FORWARD OR REVERSE IT STALLS,ALMOST LIKE A KILL SWITCH.I HAVE NOT DONE ANYTHING TO THE SHIFTER OR CABLES IT JUST SAT OVER THE WINTER.FIRST TIME I TRIED TO SHIFT ****ER WAS BOUND.AFTER MOVING BACK AND FORTH IT FREED UP.ANY IDEAS ?

outdrive cable needs replacementand/or shifting mech. corroded or stiff. its activating the shift interupt switch that is supposed to work only coming out of gear. pull the drive and check it out.

CABLE WAS REPLACED LAST YEAR AND I DID NOT HAVE ANY TROUBLE LAST YEAR

Yes i do boat in salt water,is it common to replace the cable every year?

No,.......... <br />But, If when it Is changed,+ Some How, For WhatEver Reason,.. Saltwater can get Too the New Cable,... <br />It gets Very Old,+ Crusty rather Quickly........<br /><br />Do you have a Bilge Water issue,.... Maybe it's getting Wet from the other side.........<br /><br />In Saltwater,... The Fishing is Great,... But, Saltwater is your boats Worst Enemy..... <br /><br />I Miss the Seacoast of Maine,... But living on the shore of a Freshwater Sea is a Pretty Good Substitute...............

what about the updated bushing kit to prevent intrusion into the shift cable slide area?.

what about the routing of the cable inside the boat,could the outer sheath have been damaged and is getting water in it that way

Try diss,with the key off,work the shifter/throttle from foward to reverse(in gear) bout 20 times,then in neutral,muffs on,start the flooded engine and get it to idle.Now try shifting it.If still dooin it,remove drive and figure-out where the water is getting in the cable and/or fix the sticky shift shaft.
