Mercruiser 5.0L 305 cid ignition prob..

Hey guys, I've wrote in on this problem before. I got the tune up and did a bit extra. Now I having a problem with the boAt dying. It starts and runs great, we shut it off for a while and then cruise, and it starts to chug and dies. It is getting fuel at all times, my mechanic says it could be the ignition module, located under the rotor in the distribuiter.
Any suggestions?

5.0L engines have been used by Mercruiser since the mid 70's. Trust me, the ignition and fuel systems are not the same as todays.
Year, SN, anything to help us nail down what you really have?

Don, I can't read the serial number, the year is 89

Also, there are no points, just the sensor in the cap

As with all electrical issues, check your grounds first. If that does not work replace the module. I'm guessing that it's an HEI distributor.
