I have a 1994 5.7 Mercruiser engine which I have recently overhauled.
The original thermostat housing, ("design II") did not have check balls installed. The housing was badly corroded and needed replacing. Design II is no longer available and Service bulletin 99-2 advises replacing with P/N 87290A23. This part as per Mercruiser serial number matching, is in fact "Design 1". Note that design 1 does not have check balls.
The only place I can locate this housing with check balls is in Mercruiser manual 9 page 6A-23.
Should I simply add the check ballls? or block of the T in the housing and the riser and replace the gasket with a free flow gasket?
It seems that runing the engine with no balls would allow cold water to floww freely to tthe riser in fact doing the same as removing the thermostat...
Experts out there please input...
