1988 alpha 1 gen 1. Rebuilt outdrive and replace bellows along with bearing and shift cable. Can not get drive shaft in now. Used alignment tool and grease is showing splines only touching on the top of tool. What do I do and how. Ant feed back would be great

Adjust the mount until you get even grease marks. It also helps to turn the prop a little (locked in forward) to align the splines.

Grease at the top of the tool means the engine is too high at the front, lower the side mounts evenly until you have an even grease pattern on the tool....

Yeah, don't put the drive on until it is aligned properly, or you'll be pulling the engine shortly to replace the coupler. If the drive doesn't go on (relatively) easy, you aren't right. I loosen the top nuts on the mounts, get a bottle jack under the exhaust manifold to take weight off of the mount and then adjust the lower nut. In your case, you'll want to lower the engine if you are getting spline marks heavy on top, so give the lower nut a few turns down on each side and check again. It helps to have a friend with you to check as you adjust. The tool should slide in very easy when you have it right.

You replaced the gimbal bearing.... need to make sure align the bearing with the alignment tool as defined in the alignment procedure

Ayuh,.... The big nuts usually have bend-tab locks on 'em,... Flatten 'em, then break-free the top nut,....

As ya lower the bottom nut, count the wrench flats of the nut to keep track of the adjustment,...

Have a read Here,.... Found in Don'S Adults Only section,...
