Yeah, don't put the drive on until it is aligned properly, or you'll be pulling the engine shortly to replace the coupler. If the drive doesn't go on (relatively) easy, you aren't right. I loosen the top nuts on the mounts, get a bottle jack under the exhaust manifold to take weight off of the mount and then adjust the lower nut. In your case, you'll want to lower the engine if you are getting spline marks heavy on top, so give the lower nut a few turns down on each side and check again. It helps to have a friend with you to check as you adjust. The tool should slide in very easy when you have it right.
