Please Help!!!:grumpy:

while running engine outside of boat (as seen in pic) the engine bogged down and sounds like it was going to stall or worse... also white smoke coming out of areas identified in picture...see pic (click it gets bigger...so to speak)

....yes it has new oil filled to proper level
....yes i ran the water hose through the exhaust
....sounded fine for about 3-5 minutes before
...no visible external leaks
...and the carb is rebuilt/functioning/tuned

White smoke or steam? Steam would suggest a water leak. Concerns me you said 'ran the water hose through the exhaust'. When test stand running an engine all you need to do is put the water into the inlet hose (the one that you would connect to the water tube on the transom plate)... How exactly did you connect the water. I see bagged off hoses all over that engine... Not good!

Yes, a few more pics of your set up would be good. The arrows point to the area of the coupler and flywheel . . .

Tell us a bit more about this engine.

I did run the water hose through the water inlet hose on the engine...sorry, i should have said that and the bagged off hoses are just the connection where the engine water inlet hose connects to the power steering cooler

gonna have to run it again... i cant say for sure if it was smoke... i just cut power as soon as i noticed the change in the engine sound....once i cut power i walked around to the back and saw the smoke/steam coming out of that area.... perhaps i will video it this time and post on here. thanks for the quick responses

Re: Mercruiser 5.7L 350 turn key problems HELP!!

Here's what I'd do about now...

Put the hoses back on the power steering cooler and run it through the cooler like it was designed. (the less bags and things you have making the engine 'further away' from the same as it would be in the boat, the harder it is to find problems). What are those 5 litre containers with hoses in them? Looks like something else in the cooling system's been disconnected. Also, when I run engines out of the boat, I put extensions on the exhaust elbows so the exhaust cooling water is as far away from the engine as possible (I use 4" plastic gutter pipe, about 1 metre of it). If you get water splashing on hot parts, that can make steam. Also if water splashes on the electrical system it can cause engine variations...

All you should have is a water hose going into the hose that connects to the inside of the transom assembly and the water running out of the exhaust elbows. Connect battery to the normal point on the starter motor (and a negative to the engine block) and a fuel line to the inlet on the filter. You should also have the power steering hoses coupler together. Then use a remote starter switch to crank the engine. I used a very short wire link to short the 2 pins in the harness connector to simulate the key's ON position (pins 6 and 5). When you want to stop it, just remove the link.. That's all you need to do to get the engine runnable. As I have diagnostic software on a laptop, I hook that up to monitor vitals (oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel pump pressure, manifold pressure, etc), but it's not essential.

Yea, usually the ps cooler is inline with the supply to the engine . . . So, maybe no water was getting to the engine ?
