Well here it goes. I have a Mercruiser 888 that got sank a year ago and jus now getting it back going. Starter finally gave it up and had to replace it. But now that ive got it running it will not rev beyond 3,000RPMs and it backfires if you try giving it WOT. Checked timing it was a lil advanced but only by a few degrees and put a new set of points on the old ones were pretty worn. I havent worked on it anymore but none of that helped. Sounds like possibly something in the fuel system not sure though? Anyone with any advise would be a great help!!

what kind of engine is hooked to the 888.... that would help in diagnosing the problem...

An 888 is a 302 ford.....
Did you drain & refill the gas tank?...
Backfre without load is generally caused by a lean fuel condition, or a burnt or tuliped valve....
Do a compression test, but I think I see a rebuilt carb in the future....
Are you sure you have the ignition wires right?.....

My 75 slickcraft with a 302/888 drive had a similar problem. I changed the wires, plugs. and rotor cap and she then ran like she was brand new.
