mercruiser 898 overheating

hey guys ive had a high speed overheat problem since i got this boat 2 years ago.

It's a 78 mercruiser 898, with 305 engine, raw water cooled in a lake.

Since ive had it, i've replaced the raw water pump impeller 4 times just to be sure it was ok.
I replaced the hose from the drive to the transom and checked it for kinks, and made sure the connector that goes through the transom was clear.

I replaced the manifolds and risers using the restrictor gasket between the two.

Removed the heads and had them redone. All passages were clear in block and heads.

Replaced circulating pump on engine.

Took the engine out and check backflow flaps in y pipe

Removed the supply hose from the oil cooler, [which is clear of any obstructions] and checked for the minimum 3.6 quarts in 15 seconds, and got a little over 4 quarts. But on this test i didnt do it in the lake, i did it with the drive in a big tub of water.

And today I didthe clear hose test from the oil cooler to the stat housing and there was some air coming through the line, not tiny bubbles but a larger pocket of air running across the top of the hose.

I ran it up to 3000 rpm and the air pocket got a small amount larger but it seemed to be flowing lots of water but still overheated to 210 degrees.

Btw, thermostat is 143 degrees and always runs at least 160-180 and the temperature guage is accurate.

This engine uses the log style manifolds.

Sorry about the long post, just trying to give you all the info. Any help would be appreciated.

Look at the tube that goes into the raw water pump and up to the water pocket cover in the upper. Also make sure the water pocket cover isn't all bubbled and burned from overheats.

Restriction gasket?

What Don said

and........What items on the engine (a 1979) might be a wrong fit? Did the previous owner make a mistake with some parts?

I would double and triple check all the hoses for proper routing, do you have a hot water heater in the boat?

Hey Don S
Ill check that water pocket cover again just to make sure its ok.

When I bought the new manifolds the instructions said I needed to use the restrictor gasket with the pinhole fore and aft on that model.

I have the manual and it shows all hose routing is correct.

the only thing different is an automotive water circulating pump. But it is the proper rotation.

Is there someway I can bypass the raw water pump and pump water through past that point to see whether that is the problem or not?

Did you have the boat in the water when you did these tests? The clear hose test can not be done on muffs. Or did you do the test with the drive in the tank? If in the tank, was the engine level or front down?

i've replaced the raw water pump impeller 4 times just to be sure it was ok.
What about the pump housing and base. If they have been damaged by the previous owner.

Could you post a picture of your engine, especially the thermostat housing and hose routing.

Re: mercruiser 898 overheating

Hey Don

When I did the clear hose test the drive was sitting in a very large tub of water that was deep enough to keep the pickup covered, and the engine I think the front may have been very slightly up.

The raw water pump housing and base have been replaced once, but I will check them out again when I check that water pocket cover.

Its raining here today so I cant get a picture yet but will soon.

I appreciate everyones help greatly.

Well I had the 888 The same as yours but with a 302 ford.
Yeah I sure fixed it, by ripping it out and getting a Volvo.
If you look at my first posts I came on here asking for help...then asking for advice on re-power... later on getting help installing the new to me package.
You sure came to the right place, the people on here are the best.
