Mercruiser Alpha 1 lower unit interchangeability

Got a quick question.

i have a 3.0l mercruiser with an alpha 1 drive. cannot find any serial numbrers or stamped numbers as the PO painted over everything with some heavy paint. any who......

i was wondering if a lower unit from an alpha 1 for v8, believe it is 260hp, can be used with the 3.0 upper without changing any gears in the lower unit?

Depends on the year of the drives. There's the Alpha drive and the Alpha Gen II drive, and the upper from one will not fit the lower from the other. Do you have any pictures? If it's the right gen, it'll bolt right up..

I do not have a pic of the lower, trying to see if it is woth picking up. it is an alpha 1 gen 1. below is a pic of the upper
