mercruiser Alpha 1 Question

1994 mercruiser 350 with Alpha 1. I noticed this morning gear oil under my out drive. Small spot. Looked up under the drive, and the lower bellow has gear oil coming off it. It may be coming from the upper bellow, and leaking down on the lower.

What could be the problem in making the gear oil leak from this area? What should I do?

Thanks
Michael

Re: mercruiser Alpha 1 Question

You have an Alpha I Gen II, Not an Alpha I. They are different.
You could have a leaking front seal in the outdrive that would leak oil into the bellows, but basically it shouldn't be able to get out of the bellows.
Have you had the drive off lately? Did you put a new gasket between the drive and bellhousing when you reinstalled it if you did have it off ?

Re: mercruiser Alpha 1 Question

Hey Don,
Thanks for your reply. Well I have not had the drive off, but the guy I got the boat from said he had just had it re sealed. I can tell it has been off due to the new gasket between the bell, and the drive. Also the bellows are new. The oil in the resevoir isn't milked up.
I know I will need to pull the drive, but what should I look for? Also what special tools will I need?
I am kinda expecting like you said the front seal leak, and possibly replacing a bellow. Is this a real big change once the drive is off?

Thanks
