Hello Everyone,

I have used this forum the past 3 years to assist with maintenance of my boat and it has been extremely helpful. A big thanks to everyone who provides such great insight.

Now onto the issue....

93 Mercruiser Alpha One Gen II
Engine Ser. No: 0F012865
Transom Ser. No: 0F051718

I just pulled the boat out to get it ready for the season and it started right up. After running a few minutes I noticed that no water was being exhausted through either the transom exhaust ports nor the prop. All that was coming out of either was air. Also noticed that the engine temp was creeping up around 180, so I quickly shut it down.

I pulled both of the drain plugs and got no water coming out of either, which means water is not making it up to the heat exchanger. This makes me think that my sea water pump impeller at least is shot and needs to be replaced. I'm going to go ahead and replace the whole pump while I'm at it.

Several questions:

First, are there any other things I should check/replace while I have the drive off? The bellows were last replaced in 2009 and seem to be in decent shape. Other than that and lubing the U-joint, I haven't done any maintenance to this part of the boat since I purchased it in 2011. I'm going to go ahead and lubricate the U-joint and replace the sea water pump. Could there be any potential blockages that is preventing water from reaching the heat exchanger that I need to look out for? Any possible damage to the lower drive from not getting cooling for a few minutes?

Second, could you please direct me to the parts I should purchase for replacing the water pump, as well as anything else I may need to do?

Thanks for the help!

Just above your post, click on the Merc parts icon. Hows that for easy.

What all to look for is another easy one. Everything back there. Have you done any reading in the stickies at the top of the forum?
The winterizing and summerizing threads will give you the normal PM items.

Re: Mercruiser Alpha One Gen II- No Water Through Exhaust Ports

Thanks for the quick reply, Don.

I did all of the PMs associated with pulling the drive in the Winterization sticky in October and didn't find any problem. While I have the drive pulled again, I'm going to run through that list again. This includes checking the gimbal bearing, bellows, u-joints, etc.

Right now, I'm looking at purchasing the complete sierra water pump kit (18-3147) Volvo Penta Engine Part Catalog - iboats

I also am going to replace the outdrive gaskets since I didn't do it last time with the sierra set (18-2619-1D).

Any other PMs/parts besides the winterization PMs and parts I have listed above?

Finally, will I need any special tools for any of this? I have the alignment bar already. I seem to recall the manual saying you need a special tool to replace the sea water pump...

Thanks.

Get the 18-2619-1 gasket kit, not the 18-2619-1D the D stands for Display which means it has the fancy packaging, unless you think the extra dollar for a pretty package is worth it.

The pump kit is fine, if you need the housing. Being a 93, it probably does have a lot of grooving in it.

The only special tools you need for the water pump is the face seal tool, but it's included in the pump kit you listed. The other tool that is handy is the alignment pins, or you could get a couple of 2" long metric bolts and cut the heads off. They just keep the gasket in place while you turn the shaft to install the housing.

Thanks to both of you for the assistance. I'm planning to do this work in about 2 weeks, just wanted to get all of the parts lined up. I'm assuming It'll be pretty easy to tell if the shutters are melted or not..If anyone else has anything to add, please feel free.
