Was helping a friend put his outdrive back on today. It is a merc alpha IO .It is probably a late 70,s.Here is the noise .There was a rattle coming out by the small exhaust hole that lets exhaust water out. He said it has always been there. After we shut the engine off I looked up the hole and noticed what looked like a washer that was ratteling. Looked up other hole and it looks like maybe there is a rubber spacer or washer that is attached though this one was just laying up there loose. I know someone on this forum will know what it is and if it could cause a problem for him. Thanks love you guys

What part of the shutter would the washer be from Do you think that he no longer has a shutter. I know on my pre alpha my shutter is way down on the bottom have to take motor out to change . Is a alpha outdrive the same he has 4 cyl motors probably not

"What part of the shutter would the washer be from?"<br />The Grommet that holds things in place ??????<br />"Do you think that he no longer has a shutter ?"<br />Ya, He's Still got it... Just Not where it Belongs.......<br />I Think , on the Alpha1s it's mounted at the top of the Downpipe... Just under the big rubber coupler pipe....

The shutters in my '76 with a Ford V8 are in th base of the exhaust pipe. The engine had to be out to get to them. Hope yours is easier to get to.

Bondo is correct, thats exactly where the flapper is.I have replaced them before and dont recall a washer. The flapper has a rubber coat on it that may have come off, this may be what you see.The flapper itself would make the noise you are describing.Charlie
