mercruiser anodes material

Decided I'm going to keep my boat in a marina this year. All the anodes show signs of serious pitting, but I did'nt worry last year because I was trailering. Now the confusing part... as I'm searching for a replacement kit I'm having a hard time figuring out what type of metal I should use. I will be keeping the boat in Lake St Claire, fresh water. Some sites say to use zinc, others alluminum, one place makes anodes made of both metals.I even read allum. is better because they "clean" themseves as you cruise.Anyone able to enlighten me?

Thanks in advance
Jim

They are zink and can be purchased from Mercury or Sierra, if you are haveing major pitting problems ck you boat and the area that it is at rest in for improper grounds or reversed polarity on you boat or a boat with shore power pluged in near by

Anodes are designed to be sacrificial. If yours are getting eaten away, that's a good sign - generally speaking.

If they're getting blasted so that you can time their disappearance with a stop-watch, then something else nearby is doing it. Often it's leaky shore power - sometimes bad ground in the local marina.

Magnesium 'sacrifices' faster than zinc, which in turn 'sacrifices' faster than aluminum.

All anodes will show surface oxidation as they work for you. The obvious action is to clean them. It's no big deal, is it? Just get a file and abrade them a bit, till they're shiny. Then they'll corrode away some more.

The other thing to remember is that, as they get eaten away, their surface area diminishes, and they are therefore less effective. Solution? Replace when they are around half gone. A check with the local lads, or marine suppliers, will usually tell you which type of anodes are best for your local waters.

Never neglect them - they're the best insurance you can get for your expensive underwater bits!

Zinc has been my choice, wear is slow, but I do trailer, so it is difficult to know what is in store for water kept.
