I am converting a 23 Seacraft over from an old Volvo 280 drive to a Mercruiser Alpha 1 G1

I would like to upgrade to binnacle too but I cant find one that I like. I do however like the mercruiser Part #8M0041431 but it says it is for the Gen 2 drives. Is there anyway to make it work either with Gen1 or Gen 2 cables. I have to buy new cables anyway. Thanks

Hi there, it seems your getting your Gen 1 and 2 stern drives and control cables mixed up.

If you buy a gen 2 control like the one you want, then you need to buy Gen 2 cables as well. Gen 1 cables and controls do not crossover/work together with the Gen 2 stuff. Though this is an Mercury outboard service bulletin linked below, you can use it to help understand the differences between the two as it is the same concept as mercruiser. Just the part numbers will be a different is all.

Mercruiser Shift Cables. Sterndrive and outboard shift cables. Control Cables

As long as you buy the right cable set, The Gen two shifter and cables will fit the engine side like normal no matter the Generation of the engine/drive package is.:)

"Binnacle"?
That word caught me once to. Binnacle: a built-in housing for a ship's compass and light that at some point became binnacle control box, shift handle. Bigger cruiser type boats such as Sea Rays, Four winns, etc. seem to use the word more often than not nowadays.

Re: mercruiser binnacle

Thanks, sorry for he confusion.... Yes I meant " top mount shifter". More or less can I use a gen 2 shifter on a gen 1 drive. Thanks for the replies. I will look at that service bulletin when I get a chance.
