have oil and water leaking into bilge. reading articles suggest possible causes for water are, gimbal housing, gimbal ring steering shaft, Ujoint bellows, shift cable bellows. for oil, gear end yoke seal. i know the outdrive must be removed but will the engine need pulling? any info on either will be welcome.

if your getting water and gear oil then you've been running around with torn bellows for a while. The water as ruined the upper yoke in the drive, and the drive is leaking oil back through the bellow, through the gimbal bearing, and into the bilge.

You need all your bellows done (should be done once every 5 years or so anyways). And the drive's upper will need to be opened up and inspected.

Bondo. the oil is gear oil. the reservoir for the gear oil drops slightly after two or three hour running.
