mercruiser broken starter nose

HELLO new here .I have a 1987 wellcraft sportsman 250 with the 5.7 liter engine,,alpha one stern drive..I had an overheating issue found a blown head gasket..tore it down replaced all upper gaskets ..new head bolts , thermostat.etc...I pulled the drive apart replaced the water pump...ran engine about 25 min at idle shut it down..went to restart it and the starter isnt engageing the teeth...pulled it ouit and found the nosecone broke off....what would cause this...and can i go too the local parts store and get a small block chevy starter for replacement...thanks...

if you only use the shell and put your marine parts inside so you dont blow yourself up.

When you did all this teardown and replacing, did you replace your exhaust manifolds? Your engine could be hydrolocked. And that could be what broke your starter. Take the spark plugs out and turn it over by hand, see if water comes out of any cylinders.

removed plugs tonight after work cylinders 2,4,6,8 full of water 1,3,5,7 are dry...so it looks like new manifolds are being ordered...thanks

Yep, hydrolocked engine will bust up a starter pretty quick. I hope that wasn't salt water in the cylinders. But if you got it to turn over with a wrench, you should be okay.
