On a mercruiser 140. 1986 model. Can an auto fuel pump be modified to safely work. Is there any differences other than the clear line to the carb. (in case the diaphram ruptures)

No modifications that are Coast Guard approved, and they are the ones that certify marine fuel pumps.
The fact that you could leak gas into the bilge if the automotive pump went bad and could cause an explosion should be enough reason to get the proper "MARINE" fuel pumps, carbs, distributors, alternators, starters, ..........etc.......etc.

what makes the fuel pump a "marine" fuel pump, other than a stamping on the housing?

Re: Mercruiser Carb.

Ron:
Helped neighbor swap out fuel pumps a week or so ago. He went with an auto-type after pulling the broken marine one from the boat.
He did this for several reasons. I think the first was that there were no marine ones available, and here is a re-man auto for 1/3 the price. Winter is on the way and just to keep it going till the piers come out, etc.
We did a side-by-side compare on the bench and the only real difference proved to be in the housing. The marine housing had no weep hole vent because it was gasketed closed. Therefore it would not leak into bilge. ("proved" might be too strong a word--close visual inspection is more accurate)
Not saying I would do it, but he felt comfortable enough to simply RTV the weep hole in the auto fuel pump housing and install.
It is working, but I'm getting a slot farther down the pier from him next year!

a few bucks saved isn't worth the possible bang, lawsuits, deaths, ect...... it's coast guard approved for a reason.

Side-by-side won't show the differences, because they are all on the inside!

For a start, the marine unit is dual diaphramed.

As everybody else is saying, "why risk your life (or worse, someone elses) just to save a few dollars?" If you're too cheap to do the job properly, sell the boat and save someone some grief.

Chris..............

Jim, Best thing you can do is to report that guy to the pier owner. He'll thank you for it.
