I have a 1994 Merc Alpha Gen 2 w/ commander 3000 control and was wanting to know if I can replace it with a newer (2005) Mercruiser factory control. The 3000 plastic housing has broken tabs and doesn't stay together during shifting resulting in rough operation.

Thanks, Bond-o!

I guess I'll try it although I have found those contols/shifters can be a PITA to take apart.

I don't think it will work for ya'. Cable anchor points are different in a new style remote control, Mercury 4000 remote control. I went through this when I put a 4000 remote control in my boat...

old style cable (what ever they call it)

Fishrdan, are the shift/throttle cable ends different between the 3k and 4k controls at the control end? If I replace a 3k w/ a 4k (with cables) will they hookup to engine end? I will to research manuals but I have'nt found very much detail on controls.
Thanks for the help!!

Re: Mercruiser Contol Swap

I'm not an expert,,, but as I understand it, 4000 remote controls started the use of Gen II shift cables, all previous Mercrury/Mercruiser remote controls used the cables with a barrel as an anchor point in the remote control. I replaced an oooold 73 Mercontrol with a 4000 shifter and the cable throws are the same on the engine/drive end, so I'd bet your 3000 shifter is the same too.

I replaced mine with a Morse - Teleflex unit last summer. I don't remember the model number, but I'm really happy with it, once I got the trim and tailer buttons working correctly.
