Mercruiser coupler spline grease

Do you have to use the Quicksliver engine coupler spline grease on an outdrive or can you just use the same grease you use on wheel bearings?

Do don't have to do anything you don't want to.

I use "marine" grease for everything . . . I know Merc calls out for a different grease on just about every lubrication point. My feeling and experience is that if you use a quality grease, it will be fine.

I was putting new hubs and bearings on a boat trailer the last time I had to buy a cartridge. I bought a name brand Marine/Trailer Bearing grease. Decided that's probably a decent enough fit for everything I need to lube on the boats, too.

Here's the thing. PROPER marine trailer wheel bearing grease is clay based, so strictly speaking, no don't use it on the splines. However, as most people use non-marine wheel bearing grease in their trailers, use that for your splines.

+1, There are many options for greases but for a job done right it's usually best to stay with something that is recommended for the components you're working on. Mercruiser used to make this an expensive challenge as you had to buy many types of greases for different areas but they have just recently came out with a better grease that is more of a one grease handles most everything specification wise.

There's probably an alternative grease available that has similar requirements at an local auto store now, just have to do some homework to find something close to Mercruiser's Extreme Grease, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercruiser-H...-/141023215038
