I have a 96 5.7L with alpha drive, broke motor in today, and everytime i came off plane i would back down to about 2k rpms let it settle down and then back to idle, when i came down to idle the rpms would drop off for a split second like you turn the switch off and then come right back, never long enough to kill it, just agravating. any ideas????

Adjust the idle speed screw on the throttle linkage.

Bring it up just a bit.

Id say check your forward reverse switch to if you have one that might be kicking in to soon and and the motor is getting ready for you to go in reverse

....and I'd say check the adjustment of your shift cable, especially in relation to the shift interrupt switch. And, the shift interrupt switch may be adjusted just a shade too tight (too little travel before opening).
If the problem is more of a 'stumble' than a cut-off, yes, adjust the idle speed UP just a hair...then too, you idle mixtures could be a shade lean or the timing a degree or two retard.

FWIW...Ed in 'ol Virginny:)

Lower shift cable needs adjustment, or probably replacement. Sounds like it is activating the shift interrupt switch prematurely.

Shift cable adjustment required. It is engagingthe interrupt switch, that's why it cuts oun instead of stumbling

Download manual #14. Section/page 4A-28 shows the location of your shift plate. It's where the shift cable from your remote control (throttle/s) tie into the lower shift cable/s that go to your outdrive. It also explains the adjustment. The way I understand it, and the way Don S's post describes it, is that the switch intentionally stalls the engine for a very brief time to allow shifting out of gear. So, it is normal for it to hesitate for a split second...I can hear mine, but I have super-human senses. Your explanation sounds like it is working properly, but maybe dwelling a little too long...hence the need for adjustment. I'm just speculating, but that's what it sounds like to me. Here's the link for manual #14;
