Mercruiser dash question

Good afternoon y'all, I just received an old '78 model Marquis i/o Mercruiser 120 from my in-laws as a gift, and have some hopefully simple questions. I'm new to boating and don't know much, so with that, on the dash, there's a gold looking screw type water-proof cap, which holds what looks like a fuse? There's not a fuse there, so I don't know what it does or is for? Any ideas?
Also, I've figured out that the trim works but the trim gauge doesn't work, as the wires on the stern are corroded and mostly missing. They look fine inside the boat, up to the motor/ stern. My question is, can I just solder up some new wire from the wires sticking out of the back of the boat to the trim (gimble?). I'm not sure what it's called, but it's the small round discs on each side of the stern? Are these the trim motors? Please excuse my ignorance of proper terms. ) If I can wire new lengths of wire here, what gauge, type, etc? I would assume they would need to be some sort of marine grade, water-proof wire?
Thanks for the help, newbie T

Re: Mercruiser dash question

Welcome to iboats tman,
I have no idea about the "screw type water-proof cap", I would try tracing where it goes and try to figure out what you have on the dash.
The "small round discs" are the trim "sensors", they tell the position of the outdrive and tell the switch when to stop. Your trim motor is inside the boat, behind the seats or something like that, it will in the back though. Usually a black motor with a reservoir on bottom. You can probly reconnect the wires(run new ones). I would suggest marine grade wire, it supposed to withstand better. If you don't use marine grade definately use flexible wire.
The "gimble" is between the motor and the outdrive. There are gimble bearings, gimble housing...hope this will help you.

Re: Mercruiser dash question

Hey PO2, good to hear from you. I'm assuming it's Navy since there isn't a coast in OK? :) I was a PO3 when I left San Diego in '95, but the carriers were a bit larger than this 16 footer I'm working on. Thanks for the help, that does help to know the terms when you're working on things. Makes it easier to describe. I'll trace the cap wiring this weekend, as the lights on the bow and stern aren't working either. I couldn't find a fuse box, if there is one, so maybe this is the fuse holder for the lights? I'm not sure as when my in-laws had the boat, the lights did work. Thanks again, Tman
