Mercruiser Direct drive Whining in reverse stalled once

Have a direct drive mercury 5.7 magnum inboard. Runs fine in forward gear and shifts fine into reverse but when i apply throttle it makes a whining noise almost like a supercharger sound, and one time it stalled the engine. Any ideas what may be causing this sound? New to direct drive boats so not too sure if there is a problem here. Thanks

by direct drive you mean a straight inboard with a transmission??

yes a whine/whirring noise in reverse is quite common for inboards
