I am in the process of getting ready to yank my 1986 Mercruiser 5.7/Alpha 1 out of my own boat this weekend (to replace an oil pan with a rust hole). What is the purpose of the fiber washer and double sprung lock washer under the rear mounts? Should they be replaced or reused? Also, I'm having a tough time trying to locate front mounts for the same boat- I would like to replace mine. Are they vessel specific or somewhat universal? They are the type with 2 lag bolts each to the stringers, and one stud with two nuts for adjustment. Where would I go to buy them for a 1986 SeaRay 230 Weekender? Thanks! Bill

Thank you! I actually have already have that manual. Even though it shows where they go, it still doesn't actually say what the purpose is of the Fiber Washer and double sprung lockwasher?

Well,....

They're there because Merc put them there,+ it allows the motor to line up with the drive.....

Re: Mercruiser Engine Mounts

I just re-used them when I put my 350 back in. I don't know for sure but maybe the reason for the double lock washer and fiber washer is because there is alot of vibration in that area and Merc wanted to make sure that those 2 bolts stayed put. I had to buy a new front mount for mine and the only difference between the one I bought and my original was the height of the main stud with the 2 nuts on it,(the newer mount being the longer of the 2 but it worked just fine). My boat is an 87 century 24' with a 350 merc.

Re: Mercruiser Engine Mounts

my local dealer had the assemblies in stock. It was not much to replace both bolts and all the washers... Was a small price to pay to make sure they were as intended... Note that by changing those and more i suspect the rubber mounted engine mounts for the more solid ones I put in... my new v-8 stroker motor moves around less than the v-6 I took out... I've also had the outdrive out and back in a few times this week and for the first time I've not had to do any monkeying - the adjustments have been dead on since the first time...

Re: Mercruiser Engine Mounts

Well, in all fairness, I haven't looked too hard for the engine mounts. I'm just getting prepared to rip into it this weekend and looking for any pitfalls. First time I've yanked an inboard boat motor before. All I did was Google "Mercruiser motor mounts" and a few other iterations of that. Not much comes up- even on EBAY. I'll call a local marina and see what's available. Won't even know if mine takes a one piece or 2 piece rear main seal to buy the pan until I get it out anyway. But I do want to thank Don S. and Bondo for posting those factory manual links- both here and in the other thread I posted in- they were much better than the Seloc and the other manual I have. Appreciate the info guys. Let's hope the bolts come out OK! Bill

Let's hope the motor mount bolts come out hard....if they come out easy, you may have a stringer problem;)

Re: Mercruiser Engine Mounts

The risers are super important! Without them at the proper height the engine will vibrate uncontrollably, not to mention what it can to the drive system.

If they're rotted I would replace them and make sure to mark the location of the risers before you lift the engine.

You will also need an alignment tool to put everything back in and maker sure the engine sits true to the outdrive.

All that stuff is readily available online.

Before you attempt to pull the outdrive put it in forward or else it won't come off :)
