I posted a while back regarding swapping my engine, an old 1965 110 Hp for a 120 or 140. Now its down to it, need an engine to get going so I am trying to figure out what the compatability is from the 110 to the 120 to the 140. Can the transom plate just be swapped for the 3.0L or 140 plate? Or is each gimbal ring specific to the 110/120 transom plate?

Are you going from 1965 110 to a Mercruiser 2.5 4cyl 120-140 ?
If so they are the same.

OK, to be a little more specific I am looking at 2 options:

1. Get a 120Hp 2.5L (70-80) rebuilt and drop it right in.
2. Get a 140hp (1978) rebuilt comes with transom plate, gimbal ring and bell housing.

If I went with the 140 would I need to replace the transom plate, gimbal ring or bell housing? Will my upper unit work with the 140?

No they are all the same engine 2.5 GM just a different bore and stroke. It will all work together. I would go with the one that was rebuilt the best.
You could dod a compression test on both engines and see which one has the highest compression.
I would look at the manifold does one have a new one on it ? Thats the one I would go with.

Rebuilt is a loose term in my eyes, what was rebuilt on the engine and why did they have to be rebuilt ?

Did these engines run in fresh water or salt water ?

Ayuh,... The 140hp Motor will fit as well,...
If you start mixing transoms,... Who Know what you'll run into...
There may be manifold issues as well...

Re: Mercruiser Bell housing to drive

Re: Mercruiser Bell housing to drive

OK, I picked up the 1978 Mercruiser 140, great shape. My question is if I can use the newer bell housing (1978 with power trim) with me leg that is on my original Bell housing (1965 w reverse lock). Is it just bolt up and go? I know the new housing doesn't have the shocks like my original does but the rams seem to be in the right place to fit.

Thanks

When you say bell housing do you mean the upper unit of the stern drive ?
Those are not shocks but hydraulic cylinders.
Yes they will bolt up.

I mean the Bell housing which is attached to the gimbal ring before the upper unit (upper unit bolts to the bell housing).

Anyways my original came with the 2 hydrolic rams for the tilt but it also has 2 small shock absorbers that bolt up as well. I wouldn't think that these shocks are needed but want to be sure that the mounts for them on the leg itself won't interfere with the new hydrolic cylinders.
