Ive got a merc 470 and before I take the boat out for the first time I want to make sure the shutter is in good working order. I just had drive and bellows off and didnt notice pieces of the shutter in the exhaust. When its idiling most water/exhaust comes out side holes. Some comes out prop. This ok? How hard is it to inspect the shutter?

If its bad can it be replaced without removing drive transom or motor?

Re: Mercruiser exhaust shutter

I was able to locate it through diagrams. its an 86. mine has a coupler at the end of coolant tank, then a bent cast pipe, coupler then another bent cast pipe going to transom. I pulled(more like muscled) the middle pipe off and to no suprise there it was, just a lonely rubber coated metal rod. def no flapping going on in there.

Is this the only shutter? i found a small piece of rubber up against the starboard relief hole(im guessing its part of old shutter). i can pull it through with some pliers if they arent supposed to be there
