Is the 4 year extended warranty on a 3.0L mercruiser sterndrive worth the extra money? What are the odds of something going wrong after the original 2 year warranty is finished?

Warranty is hard to figure.Generally what lasts 90 days, will last a year. That SHOULD last two years.

I think now you have to weigh in the price of the extension.

Last I knew,the 3.0L was still carbureted.

I would maybe get the extension on the V6 and V8 options,if fuel injected.

Those parts are pricey, never mind labor.

How much is the extended wro,and what are you buying? (for a boating package).

DHP

Re: mercruiser extended warranty

We live in Ontario, Canada and have just purchased a 2006 Four Winns 180 Horizon (very nice boat!). We have the option for the 4 year extended warranty on top of the standard 2 year warranty already supplied for about $16/month. Any suggestions?

You know as well as I do, if you opt for the warranty, you'll never have to use it. If you decide against it, you'll wish you had.
I think it's called Murphy's Law.

Re: mercruiser extended warranty

Warranty generally covers defects in materials and workmanship.... most materials and workmanship issues show up in the first 10 hours of running...

You'll need to read it carefully...
see what it covers...
Year 4... if something blows up, it's probably not covered anyways, it'll be "worn out" or improperly maintained, or you hit something, or you used inferior lubricants, or you didn't change the water pump every 15 minutes or whatever other nonsense has to be done to keep the warranty active...
Plus... say it's not running right... well..you take it in.. they insist on a $500 tune up, then a battery, then this and that... then they might cover it when all that doesn't help...or they offer partial coverage, flat rate their labour and put the parts in at cost and you still paid for it...

$16/month though... that's only 1 beer and a table dance you'd be sacrificing...they figured out the price tolerance of the consumer didn't they...

You can self insure- put the $200/yr. aside ...over the next 10 years if the engine or drive goes, you'll have $2000 to help fix it...without any arguments from the service writer...

Not sure where you are exactly, but in Ontario, boats get used an average of 35 hours/year.... that's 3 hours a month, which means you're paying $5+/hour for that warranty assuming it's 4 years EXTRA beginning when the standard warranty ends...

EDIT - I just reread your post.. make that $10/hour

I am with hystat, unless this warranty would cover your insurance deductible if you hit something. That might be worth it, or if the dealership would winterize the boat every year for free if you buy the extension.
