circulating pump - leaking weep hole. Replace seal/bearing myself?

Hi there - i noticed my circulating pump is leaking quite a bit from weep hole. I presume this is not normal? I have quite a bit of salt on front of oil pan after a hard run. Also some crystals around water pump seal (i replaced gaskets last month).

Was curious what is leaking? Bearing / bush / seal? Can I press out/in a new one? Yes i know i can throw in a new one but why not try rebuild mine? Was wondering if anyone has any idea -

ford 351w mercruiser.

thanks

Water coming out of the weep hole is your indicator that the internal seal on the pump has failed. By reading your post I presume you're running in salt water? If so I wouldn't even think of trying to rebuild your existing pump, , ,even if parts are available.
I'll bet the inside of the pump is so pitted and corroded that you'll end up pitching it anyway.

Save yourself the time and buy a new/re manufactured pump.

get a marine pump (brass impeller) vs the automotive version.

unless its a mid 40's Cadillac where there are no new pumps and your forced to rebuild, I would just buy a new pump. it will be under $100

Once you see the water coming from the weep hole, it's past the seal, run threw the bearing and is now visible. The problem with the seal it that it's 'marine', meaning SS.. Good luck finding one. And the bearing needs replacing too. With the new seal and bearing the cost it up at the cost of a complete new one, so....

replace it if you try to rebuild it the internals of the pump may be worn to the older parts and when u reduild it it may still leak

thanks guys - yup will put it on the list. right now the motor is cooling very well so wont put it at the top of the list. temps stay at middle of gauge for a long time before creeping up - My carb base gasket (rochester 2 Jet) is leaking when hot and causing a lean condition -
I sprayed brake kleen and revs picks up around the idle mix screws - i first thought maybe they suck air in? anyway - will pull it sometime to have a look.

Don't wait for a failur. It's giving u a warning sign it's about to fail. It needs replacing. Best advice with a boat if you know there's a problem fix it. Sucks getting towed in.

hi all - my circulating pump is leaking and Im keen to figure out what i need to replace the leaking part, everything seems fine other than its slowly leaking..

would a cheap fix be to replace the seal? anything else like the wear plate etc? I cant find any part diagram so referencing another site -

Part #12 ol seal,
Part #13 - bearings (x2)
Part #16 - Oil seal

wd this solve the leak? im presuming the water is leaking out of the "oil" seals?

Parts:

#10 59503 WEAR PLATE (1 required per assembly)
#11 23-47511 SLEEVE, WATER PUMP COVER (2 required per assembly)
#12 26-23300 OIL SEAL, WATER PUMP SHAFT (2 required per assembly)
#13 30-20861 BALL BEARING, WATER PUMP SHAFT (2 required per assembly)
#16 26-59564 OIL SEAL, WATER PUMP SHAFT (1 required per assembly) SERIAL 00000000-04476955

so i removed the pump today and inspected the sealing surfaces i cleaned 2 months back - it seems the pump is not leaking from the weep hole but between the steel plate and the pump.. i checked both with a straight edge and they seem fine - what can i do?

If the seal was leaking surely it would leak past the pulley? there is nowhere else it can go? motor is assembled like so:

Engine block (with weep hole) --- gasket -- stainless wear plate/cover --- %%leaking here%% --- gasket --- water pump.

The pump is completely blocked off at the back by the plate.. just an in and out hole (no leaks found here)
