mercruiser fuel pump

I have been rebuilding a 3.0L inline for a year. I have cranked the engine to bring fuel to the carb but have been unable to draw fuel from the tank. My question is ,. Does the mechanical pump require priming or is the pump shot?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... Run it from a remote tank of fresh clean gas, atleast for testin' purposes,.....

A length of fuel line from yer can, right to the fuel pump,.....

If it doesn't pull fuel, check for an air leak on the suction side.
