Mercruiser Gen I vs Gen II

Hi everyone,

I have a 1985 boat with a 260 hp Mercruiser w/ Alpha one outdrive. Looking at buying a 1996 boat that already has an Alpha One outdrive with transom assembly. Just missing the engine.

My question is -- Will my 1985 Mercruiser complete engine drop right into the 1996 boat and hook up to the motor mounts and transom assembly? I know there are a some differences between a Gen I and Gen II engine, but if my engine is complete and I would keep everything with it's vintage (starter, manifolds, risers, flywheel, engine coupler).. Will all work having my Gen I engine in the 1996 boat or are there modifications that would be needed?

I know my Gen I outdrive wouldn't fit a Gen II transom assembly, but the 1996 boat already has the transom assembly and outdrive. So, I just want to know if I'd have to change anything on my engine to make it work in the newer boat...

Thank you for any replies..

Should fit like it was made for it.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your input. Bond-o, what do you mean by I shouldn't run into any "real" problems. What problems would you anticipate?

Splines on a Gen II outdrive should fit a Gen I coupler right??

Ayuh,... Matter of Fact,.. They're All the Same...

I'm just saying that over the 11 years difference,...
There's probably Some changes,... Fuel lines,..?? Wiring,..?? maybe the wiring colors,..?? Etc...
Incidental stuff....

Very good. Basically, I have a 1985 boat that I don't really like, but I like the engine because I built it up from a longblock myself. So, I've been searching for another boat to drop it into. These days I'm seeming to find project boats that need an engine pretty cheap...

Different fuel lines and wiring don't really bother me. I was more worried about fitting the transom assembly, engine mounts being in the right spot, and the risers meeting right with the Y-pipe... oh - and more importantly, the wife allowing me time to work on it!
