Hi all,

I have a leak I am trying to track down. I haven't run the boat yet this year, but it leaked last year and I wanted to address it before taking it out.

First, a little history. It is a 93 Sunray that I bought last year. When I bought it, they replaced the shift cable (which leads me to believe the shift bellows may be the issue). When sitting, it leaks more when the drive is turned to the left or the right, enough to fill the bilge and out onto the floor of the boat overnight, but straight up, It doesn't seem to leak much if at all. I am definately putting a float switch on the bilge pump. When winterizing it last year, the drive oil drained really slow, thick as molasses and looked like it hadn't been changed in a decade. It wasn't milky at all, though, so I don't think water is an issue in the drive. It did have some shavings in it, but I wasn't too concerned about that, judging by the age of the oil.

Where do you guys think this leak could be coming from. I layed down in the engine compartment and couldn't find the leak, but it is definately there. Water just doesn't condensate at that rate.

Thanks in advance.

Most likely the bellows is bad. I would pull the drive and see what the u-joints look like. There probably won't be water in there since it's been out of the water for awhile. If you have evidence of water there, you're going to have to do more than just replace the bellows unfortunately.........

I forgot to add:

I have visually inspected the bellows as well as I can without pulling the drive, and they all look like they are in good shape. Could it be the shop just didn't get one of them back in well?

OK, thanks for the quick response. BTW, I thought there was a zirk on the outside for the u-joints? Maybe I need to read the manual again.

The little nipple for the grease gun to hook to. Must be a US term you guys probably have a different name for it down-under.

Yep, as Aldo says, will call it a grease nipple. Thanks for the info. I'm sure I'll catch a few people with that :D
