I have an Alpha One Gen 2, and I've run across a problem that seems to be pretty rare (considering I haven't found anyone else mentioning it when I search for the problem.)

My boat stays in the water most of the summer. A month ago or so, I noticed that the trim up switch no longer worked, but trailer did. After a little research, I found that this was a common problem caused by a bad trim limit switch. This is a fairly major repair, so I decided to live with it (carefully) until the off season and then tackle the replacement.

Today, I had the boat out of the water for some other maintenance and I decided to double check and conform that the switch was bad. Long story short, I found that the switch wasn't even rotating when I raised and lowered the drive. It seems that the hinge pin that the drive pivots on (which is also what the limit switch indexes on), has loosened up enough that it isn't rotating with the drive any longer (!).

I've ordered the special tool required to tighten it properly, and the service manual calls for loctite on it - so my questions are:

Has anyone ever seen this before, and second, can I safely pull this pin all the way out so I can apply loctite, or is something going to misalign, fall apart, etc when it is removed?

Re: Mercruiser Hinge Pin Loose...

We just had a post on that exact problem a couple of weeks ago.
To be honest, I have never used locktite on them, and never had them come loose. When they come loose, that just means someone forgot to tighten it correctly when changing bellows or shift cable or ?????. They torque to 100 ft lbs. and you don't really need the special tool to torque them. Just a 1/2" allen wrench. Cut a 3" section off the end of your allen wrench and use a 1/2" socket and torque wrench to tighten.
