I am working on a pre-alpha (1977) drive. It has the hinge pins in the gimbal that are threaded in and take a 1/2" allen wrench to remove. My question is the person that owned this boat previously only had the nylon washer on one side. What are these "washers" actually called? I have searched using every term I can think of and I cannot locate a replacement. Are they required?

Re: Mercruiser Hinge Pin part

i'm a little confused by yer discription of a pre alpha that has screws for hinge pins. i'd a thought it had pins like mine does. anyways. there just called washers. i'd think there good to be there. for as the drive is stressed one way or the other, ya gotta figure it's gonna be riding on one or the other of them washers. that'd be better than metal to metal.... + they take up a little bit of horizonal slack between the gimble ring and the bellhouseing....

for my 75 L6. item 12 is that washer.....http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...inbr=1574&bnbr=50&bdesc=BELL+HOUSING+ASSEMBLY

I am guessing someone replaced the ring at some point. It also has the shift cable hole threaded all the way through even though the cable is the old style. The boat is indeed a 1977 Starcraft Chieftain and the drive is definitely not an Alpha.
