Mercruiser I/O white in color

A friend is describing his 1987 Sea Ray and Mercruiser I/O that he bought new in 1987. He says the outdrive came new white in color. I have never seen this, and I said he probably had an OMC. He says its a mercruiser. Has anyone got info on this?

More than likely they were trying to emulate the good drives!

Searay did white for a few years and I have seen quite few "gofasts" with color matched drives in blue, red, orange etc. These are usually custom paint jobs though.

The Mercruiser #1 drive that was on the 1966 Mark Twain my dad bought new, came directly from Mercury all painted up in white.

It's my understanding that Mercury started doing black a couple of years later (maybe even 1 or 2 years later.


It didn't take long for dad to repaint the drive black after that!!

Yup, they even painted/branded Merc. outboards the same color. all with matching (boat color) stripes. Very Chic.
