I have an old (1973) Mercruiser, 145hp I think, with an OMC outdrive. Does anyone know of a good source on how to replace the impeller, on line? I'm stationed in Baghdad right now and would like to be able to do this chore in quick order when I go home on leave at the end of Sept.

I don't know anything about an omc (love my mercruiser) but I will certainly say a prayer that you get home to work on that omc.

Re: mercruiser impeller replacement.

OBG, I am confused how you have mixed manufacturers. Mercruiser equipped boats use Mercruiser outdrives (and were usually painted black). OMC equipped boats use OMC outdrives. I know almost nothing about the OMC, except what they look like. Replacing an impeller in a Mercruiser drive involves dropping the lower unit. It's not a simple job, but guys do them all the time. If you can post a serial #, Don S & the guys will ID your unit exactly, and tell you where to get the proper manual, that will walk you through the repair.<br />Best of luck to you, stay safe, enjoy your leave, and Thank You!

Re: mercruiser impeller replacement.

Thanks for the well wishes guys, it does mean a lot. I bought this houseboat about two years ago and this is the package that came in it. It's a mercruiser engine and an OMC (painted white) outdrive. Don't know serial #s on them, I'll have to look when I get back. It is a 1973 boat. I was told by one technician that he could do it with the boat still in the water. I don't know if that's a clue or not. Thanks again for the help.

Re: mercruiser impeller replacement.

If a tech said he could do it while it was in the water, the raw water (seawater) pump must be belt driven by the engine. That would be easier than having to drop the lower unit of the drive. The boat I own has a Bravo series Mercruiser drive, and it has an engine mounted pump. Other than it being a little hard to reach the hoses, it's not too hard unbolt the whole pump from the engine. Then it's out where you can work on it. When you get home (safely) look at the engine & see if it has some sort of "extra" accesory that has big water hoses attached to it. Best of luck

Thanks for the advice. I'll have a good hard look at the whole thing next month.
