I am new to boats and never owned one yet alone driven one. When I bought this boat, The seller showed me how to work a few things. On the lever or throttle their is a button for up/down to shift the motor in the up position or the lower, and than their is a button at the bottom of that lever to put your motor up in travel mode. What I don't get, I went down tonight and turned the key to start position (no running) and when i push the up button, the motor would not move neither will it move to travel mode, if I push the button down, it will go down. Am I doing something wrong guys?

And their is also a clear container connected to the engine that saids fill to line and this thing is almost empty , it saids gear oil? is that right? what kind and whats its purpose? thank you

The engine has a oily run over it, not horrible but enough to say i don't like it, what can cause this? thanks

Hello Martine,

We have 3 issues here, so I'll deal with them one at a time.

1. Trim/tilting the drive.

The operation is a bit more complex than was explained to you. The top button does (or should) move the drive, not the motor, from full DOWN to the trim UP limit. Trimming the drive should also be done while you are using the boat, to correct for loading and different weather conditions. By trimming UP, the bow (front) of the boat will rise, and of course trimming DOWN will push the bow down, into the water...Once the trim UP limit is reached (usually about 1/3 of full UP) then to raise the drive any further requires the TRAILER button (down lower on the shift control lever). If the trim system works in the DOWN direction but you can't get it to go UP with either button, then you need to do some troubleshooting of the electrical side of the trim system.. This assumes the trim motor is totally silent, not just spinning and low on oil.

2. The drive lube oil monitor bottle. Should be filled to the line with Mercury High Performance Gear Oil. If it's empty, there is a problem.

3. Oil film on the engine. This could be the oil from the gear oil bottle. If it is, then start looking for a leak in the hose that goes from the bottle to the inside of the transom...

HTH,

Chris........
